Helen Upson was born in Southington, Connecticut in a house built on 200 acres of land belonging to the Upsons since the 1600s. She grew up in a family of two brothers and a sister. She received an AB Degree in Political and Economic History from Grinnell College. In 1943 she joined the Navy advancing to the rank of Lt. Commander. In 1958 she retired from active duty becoming an inactive Naval Reserve Officer, to complete her education. She received her MA and PhD Degrees at the University of Iowa.
In 1965, after teaching at the University of Iowa, she became the chairman of the History Department at California Western/United States International University, where she taught for 11 years until at the age of 65 she retired. She then accepted the position of adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Business at National University for 7 additional years. She had written numerous books and articles, including Order and System, a history of government regulation of corporate power, and most recently The Western Odyssey of a Connecticut Family, a history of American Enterprise. During her years in the Navy and academic research she traveled widely in the United States, including Alaska, Europe, and Mexico.
Helen was nearly 96 and is survived by 7 nieces and nephews, 21 grandnieces, and 6 great grand nieces and nephews. In 2002, she moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to be near her niece in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
