Dr. Earl Dwight Carlson, 57, passed away June 12, 2009 after a complicated illness. Earl was born at Poudre Valley Hospital to Dr. William and Beverley (Bradshaw) Carlson. He was a fifth generation Coloradan.
Earl attended Dunn and Bennett Elementary Schools, Lincoln Junior High, and University of Wyoming Prep. He graduated in 1977 from Colorado State University with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.
After an internship in small animal medicine at Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston, he founded Carlson Animal Clinic. He then worked for the State of Colorado as the animal welfare veterinarian overseeing the safety and proper care of racing animals.
Affectionately known as "Doc" by all in the racing industry, Earl was a popular figure at the racetracks. He did many studies on injury tracking and racetrack surfaces to further protect animals. He retired in 2007. He continued to do research and gave many lectures on his study area.
Earl was notable as a kind, easy-going man with a big smile and sense of humor whom everyone liked. Earl loved all animals, horseback riding, running, sports, reading Western novels and BMWs. His true passion was the University of Wyoming Cowboys, and served as a representative of the Cowboy Joe Club of Northern Colorado. Earl, a 39-year kidney transplant recipient, often counseled transplant patients.
Earl married Mary Elson in 1982. Earl delighted in and supported Mary's many adventures.
Earl is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dr. Mary Elson Carlson; mother, Beverley Carlson; sister, Dr. Susan (Virgil) Ward, two uncles, one aunt, two nieces, a great-niece, three great-nephews and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Cremation has taken place. A private family service was held. An open house will be from 3:30 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, June 23 at the home of Earl and Mary Carlson.
The family thanks Dr. Dave Abbey, Dr. Tom Chiavetta, and the entire staff at PVH for their tender care of Earl.
